DOES PORTLAND REPRESENT YOU?
DO YOU FEEL SEEN AND HEARD?

We believe the PDX CITY COUNCIL needs to level up.

REPRESENTATION.

ACCESS.

ACCOUNTABILITY.

Do you feel represented? Do you feel heard? Do you feel you have access to your City Council members? If the answer is “no”, then vote “yes” on November 8th. The time has come to manage our government like the big city we are and not the small town we used to be.

Read an Op-ed from 45-year PDX Resident - Vote Yes on Nov. 8!

REPRESENTATION.

Our City has been managed the same way since 1913 when it served 150,000 people. It’s now 2022 and while we have a population of 666,453, our government has not increased the number of City Council members to keep pace with our growth. To make matters worse, we have an “at-large” Council system, meaning candidates campaign and govern citywide. Instead of having Council members who represent specific areas of Portland, we have four Council members who are tasked with meeting the needs of the entire City. Portlanders have different needs that require specific advocacy and Council members should be selected to represent distinct geographic areas of the City to ensure all voices are heard.

ACCESS.

Our City Council, with only four members, has not changed in over a century while our population has more than quadrupled. While other large cities with the same government structure have expanded the number of council members as their populations grew, Portland has not. Increasing the size of our City Council and moving to a “representative” Council structure will provide us with access to our elected officials so that we can inform and shape the government we all want.

ACCOUNTABILITY.

Our ability to hold Council members accountable for their votes does not currently exist because our members do not represent distinct areas of the City. In addition, currently the Mayor singlehandedly determines bureau assignments and can change those assignments at whim. This makes it nearly impossible to hold Council members accountable for their performance.
